No point of sale yet? No problem, says one Canadian fintech.
Making and accepting a real-time payment on the fly may have just become easier than ever.
Ottawa e-commerce pioneer Shopify has launched a Tap-to-Pay feature directly within its app.
“Shopify app now accepts Tap to Pay,” the Canadian innovator announced on X.
“Everyone with Shopify app can now accept credit cards with their phone,” confirmed chief executive officer Tobi Lutke.
The launch simplifies the point-of-sale process for consumers and merchants.
POS giant Square released Tap to Pay on Android in Canada in 2o23 and added support for iPhone in 2024. This month, the company launched its next-generation POS app in Canada, unifying vertical-specific commerce and payments functionality into a single, customizable platform.
Shopify also unveiled Horizon, an AI-powered theme foundation for online stores.
“AI has rewritten the rules of what’s possible online,” the company states. “Our focus isn’t on what AI can do, but on how it should serve merchants and buyers.”
Shopify has been tooting the horn of AI for some time now, and the company walks the walk.
The approach is powered by Lütke himself, who is “all-in” on AI.
The rapidly evolving technology is already a “tool of all trades today, and will only grow in importance,” according to the CEO.
Shares in Shopify are up nearly 80% over the past year as the AI-first company continues to steadily rally from a post-Pandemic tumble.
Currently valued at more than $130B, Shopify is the second largest public company in Canada by market cap behind the Royal Bank of Canada.
