Global Payments to Bring Interac’s Konek Wallet to Canadian Merchants

September 30, 2026 by Fintech Newsdesk Leave a Comment

Interac’s Konek digital wallet is expanding its reach through Global Payments, giving thousands of Canadian businesses the opportunity to offer customers bank-account and card payments at online checkout.

Powered by Interac and backed by leading Canadian financial institutions, Konek lets shoppers pay by credit card or directly from chequing and savings accounts. Account-based transactions use Interac Direct, which is available exclusively through the wallet.

The rollout begins with Global Payments’ API before expanding to built-in online checkout and hosted payment solutions. Broad availability for its Canadian merchant customers is expected by fall 2026.

“Canadian merchants are navigating rising consumer expectations, and checkout has become a real differentiator,” said Chris Baron, general manager and Canada country head at Global Payments.

For businesses, Interac says Konek shifts fraud-loss responsibility from merchants to issuers and offers lower acceptance costs compared with most traditional cards.

The expansion comes amid growing interest in pay-by-bank options. Interac’s 2025 Payments Diary study found that 42 per cent of Gen Z and Millennial Canadians are increasingly open to paying directly from their bank accounts for online purchases.
