Square has officially launched its next-generation Point of Sale (POS) app in Canada, unifying its vertical-specific commerce and payments functionality into a single, customizable platform designed to support business growth and operational complexity.
First introduced 16 years ago with a mobile card reader and app enabling digital payments, Square has since expanded its offerings with tailored software solutions across industries. The newly released Square Point of Sale app consolidates these features into one interface, enabling Canadian sellers to personalize tools for their unique needs—whether they run a quick-service café, full-service salon, or multi-location retail operation.
“Square Point of Sale is an all-in-one product that recognizes sellers’ needs are not one-size-fits-all,” said Willem Ave, Head of Product for Square. “With our new app, sellers don’t have to choose between breadth or depth; they can have both with Square.”
The app introduces “modes”—feature sets built for specific industries—which allow businesses to instantly activate the tools that best suit their operations. Seven modes are currently available:
- Quick Service, Full Service, and Bar modes for food and beverage businesses
- Retail mode for inventory-rich sellers
- Appointments mode for scheduling-focused professionals
- Services mode for mobile and invoice-heavy trades
- Standard mode for general-purpose use
For organizations managing complex operations, the new POS app brings streamlined functionality. “When you have 19,000 fans at a Calgary Flames game, there’s a lot to manage,” said Steve Aldred of Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation. “The new Square Point of Sale app makes it easy to manage everything—from concessions to restaurants to merchandise—and to switch between different modes with ease. Square saves us time and money, and it just works.”
Square says the upgraded platform also improves seller discovery and adoption of industry-specific features. In internal testing, new sellers using these tailored tools grew nearly 80% faster than those using the previous POS system.
With hundreds of thousands of Canadian businesses already using Square, the company aims to equip sellers with tools that adapt to their evolution—delivering scalable solutions while maintaining the intuitive design Square is known for.
