Digital wallets now account for nearly one-third of all online spending in the country, a new report has found.
Global Payments, which recently completed its acquisition of Worldpay, this month released the 11th edition of the Global Payments Report.
The report shows that digital wallets, including services such as Apple Pay and Google Wallet, represented 32% of Canadian e-commerce transaction value in 2025.
This was second only to credit cards, which accounted for 46% of online spending and more than half of in-person spending.
Credit cards “are still Canada’s favourite payment method, regardless of how consumers shop,” the report notes. “Those surveyed indicated using credit cards at more than twice the rate of the second-most cited tool, PayPal, and more than three times that of debit cards.”
Digital wallets accounted for just 13% of point-of-sale transaction value but are forecast to exceed one-fifth of in-store spending by 2030. By then, digital wallets are forecast to represent 37% of Canadian e-commerce transaction value, while credit cards are projected to account for 42%.
Among the card companies, Visa dominates the Canadian region with market share north of 40%. Interac ranks second at 29%, and Mastercard third at 27%.

“Buy now, pay later” from firms like Affirm, Afterpay, and Klarna are also gaining steam.
“Consumers increasingly expect greater choice and flexibility in how they pay,” says Phil Hogg, Head of Canada Enterprise Business Development at Global Payments.
“The findings not only highlight the growing role digital wallets play in everyday commerce, but they also underscore the proliferation of payment options,” Hogg continued.
“Businesses that adapt to consumers’ desire for a range of payment choices will be better positioned to serve their customers and support future growth,” he believes.
Globally, digital wallets are already the leading payment method, accounting for 56% of e-commerce transaction value and 33% of point-of-sale transaction value in 2025.
Specifically, Asia-Pacific leads the world in digital wallet adoption. In 2025, digital wallets accounted for 77% of e-commerce transaction value and 62% of point-of-sale transaction value across the region.
