Coinbase is expanding its Canadian offering with the launch of regulated derivatives contracts for eligible investors, giving sophisticated traders new ways to speculate on market movements and manage portfolio risk.
The company says it is the first major crypto-native platform to offer direct access to crypto futures in Canada. The products are available through Coinbase Financial Markets, a registered futures commission merchant regulated by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission and a member of the National Futures Association.
At launch, Coinbase is offering Canadian traders access to 23 perpetual and dated futures tied to digital assets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana.
The lineup also includes five commodity futures covering assets such as gold, silver, and oil, as well as index futures tied to products including the Coinbase 50 Index.
Derivatives allow traders to take long or short positions without directly owning the underlying asset. They are commonly used to speculate on price movements or hedge against potential losses elsewhere in a portfolio.
Coinbase says the contracts have been designed with lower upfront capital requirements, including nano-sized contracts and leverage of up to 10 times. For a limited time, the company is charging eligible Canadian traders 0.02 percent per trade plus $0.11 per contract.
The launch brings a major category of crypto trading onto a regulated platform for Canadian users who previously may have relied on offshore or unregulated exchanges to access similar products.
According to Coinbase, global crypto derivatives trading volume is approximately 4.4 times larger than spot trading volume. The company also cited Bank of Canada research indicating that one-third of publicly listed Canadian non-financial corporations use derivatives to hedge their earnings.
Coinbase has steadily expanded its presence in Canada, adding products aimed at both consumers and sophisticated investors. The derivatives rollout comes shortly after the company announced an expanded partnership with Webull to provide crypto trading and custody infrastructure for Webull Canada.
The company has positioned the new offering as part of its effort to become a broader financial platform where customers can access digital assets and traditional markets from one account.
