Hovering around its all-time high, Bitcoin in 2025 is pushing deeper into mainstream markets as financial institutions across Canada and around the world continue to increase their product offerings in the cryptocurrency space.
Just a few years ago it was niche to simply know how to buy or sell Bitcoin; now the common crypto, alongside dozens of other more esoteric currencies, are readily available to trade via many exchanges and platforms such as Coinbase and Wealthsimple.
Perhaps the most telling signal that Bitcoin is mainstream is its rapidly rising presence as an ETF asset.
That is partly because the simple, low-fee structures of ETFs are attractive to many retail investors who would have otherwise avoided Bitcoin as an asset due to the complexity of buying and holding it.
Another reason is that ETFs are fully regulated and compliant with financial laws, unlike the grey market days of olde, rendering Bitcoin more legitimatized in the eyes of prior skeptics.
Four years ago, Purpose Investments made history by launching the Purpose Bitcoin ETF, the world’s first Bitcoin ETF backed by physically settled Bitcoin. This year, the Canadian firm unveiled two new core funds: Purpose Core Bitcoin ETF and Purpose Core Ether ETF.
But Purpose is by no means the only entity innovating the crypto space with investment opportunities.
Toronto’s Evolve Funds Group unveiled this year the Evolve Levered Bitcoin ETF and the Evolve Levered Ether ETF on the Toronto Stock Exchange, which aim to offer investors leveraged exposure to bitcoin and ether.
Another example is Harvest, an independent Canadian investment fund manager founded in 2009. The firm recently unveiled the Harvest Bitcoin Enhanced Income ETF (HBIX) and the Harvest Bitcoin Leaders Enhanced Income ETF (HBTE) on the Cboe Canada exchange.
“Harvest is pleased to initiate offerings with Crypto exposure with these two innovative ETFs,” stated chief executive officer Michael Kovacs.
HBIX seeks to provide investors with long-term capital appreciation through purchasing and holding, on a levered basis, a portfolio of exchange traded funds which provide exposure to the underlying price movements of bitcoin, alongside high monthly cash distributions.
HBTE meanwhile offers exposure to a diversified portfolio of companies operating within the Bitcoin ecosystem, from mining companies to blockchain innovators to coin exchanges.
Kovacs believes that “Bitcoin offers a unique growth profile as demand for this digital asset continues to grow while long term supply is limited.”
