Canada’s Top Company Launches Gen AI Chatbot for Insurance Arm

May 6, 2026 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

TD recently ranked first on LinkedIn’s annual list of Top Companies in Canada.

This week, the big bank’s insurance arm released a client-facing generative AI bot.

TD Insurance says the AI-powered chatbot, dubbed TDI Virtual Assistant, is designed to simplify the process for customers by providing responses and insights via conversational, plain-language interactions for home, auto, small business, and general insurance topics.

The TDI Virtual Assistant retrieves and summarizes information from across the Insurance website, according to a statement from the bank, helping users get real-time answers to common insurance questions without having to log in or share personal information.

“Across TD Insurance, we’re investing in digital innovation and AI to help make insurance easier to navigate for Canadians,” says James Russell, who functions as chief executive officer of TD Insurance.

The TDI Virtual Assistant “is an important step in how we’re evolving our digital experiences to be more human,” Russell commented, “offering users clear and trustworthy information, through practical solutions and responsible innovation.”

The technology was developed in collaboration with Layer 6, TD’s premier AI research and development centre, as well as the Global Technology & Solutions team.

“With Canadians looking for simple, digital ways to access information, we’re focused on delivering tools that meet them where they are,” stated Kristen Gill, a vice president with TD Insurance.

“Whether they’re exploring coverage for the first time or looking for quick clarification, this tool makes it easier to find the information they need in a way that’s fast and intuitive,” she said.

Initially launching on select pages of the TD Insurance website, the TDI Virtual Assistant will expand throughout the year and is available in English and French.

“We’re proud to be the first among Canada’s major financial institutions to bring a client-facing generative AI virtual assistant to market,” remarked Luke Gee, Chief Analytics and AI Officer at TD.

“The development of the TDI Virtual Assistant is another example of our AI team’s leadership in research and development,” said Gee. “Our cutting-edge research has unlocked our ability to put AI in our clients’ hands, creating faster and simpler experiences where they get answers in seconds.”

Other Layer 6 products include the TD Securities Virtual Assistant, the TD Wealth Virtual Assistant, the TD Branch Virtual Assistant, and TD AI Prism.
