Tangerine Reinvents Itself for Canada’s Next Era of Digital Banking

September 8, 2026 by Fintech Newsdesk Leave a Comment

Tangerine Bank is preparing to expand beyond the straightforward savings accounts and no-fee banking that built its reputation, as the Scotiabank subsidiary transforms itself into a technology-powered challenger bank.

In an interview with The Logic, Tangerine president and CEO Terri-Lee Weeks said the digital bank plans to introduce new AI-enabled products and services as part of a gradual reinvention of its business.

The strategy rests on a major overhaul of the technology supporting Tangerine’s more than two million clients. Last November, the bank signed a 10-year agreement with Engine by Starling to replace its core banking system with the British company’s cloud-native platform.

The agreement made Tangerine Engine’s first North American client and represented the largest contract secured by the technology provider since it was spun out of UK digital bank Starling Bank in 2022.

Engine’s platform is expected to support digital onboarding, chequing and savings accounts, overdrafts, debit cards and money-management features through Tangerine’s mobile app. It will also consolidate internal systems and support tools, reducing operational complexity and allowing the bank to introduce products more quickly.

Weeks has described the transformation as an effort to make sophisticated financial tools available to a much broader group of Canadians.

In an earlier interview with The CEO Magazine, she said Tangerine wants to bring financial planning and wealth-building capabilities historically associated with high-net-worth clients to the wider public.

The bank has already taken an initial step with a mobile wealth feature that gives clients a consolidated view of their assets, liabilities, portfolio composition and performance. Tangerine described that release as the beginning of a multiphase rollout when it launched the feature in February.

Future capabilities outlined by the bank include scam detection, faster onboarding, real-time spending insights, smarter budgeting and savings tools, enhanced card controls, digital-first wealth planning and AI-powered personalization. Tangerine has also signalled plans to expand its business-banking capabilities.

The modernization could arrive at a pivotal time for Canadian financial services. Payments Canada says the country’s long-awaited Real-Time Rail is scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, creating the infrastructure for instant, data-rich payments around the clock. A consumer-driven banking framework is also intended to give Canadians more control over how their financial data is shared.

Moving to a modern core should leave Tangerine better positioned to use both systems as they become available. Weeks has said the Engine platform will give the bank richer data and real-time capabilities already proven in international markets, particularly the United Kingdom.

Tangerine helped establish the direct-banking category in Canada after launching as ING Direct in 1997. Scotiabank acquired the operation in 2012, and it adopted the Tangerine name two years later.

Now the bank is attempting to update that challenger identity for an era in which Canadians increasingly expect personalized guidance, immediate payments and a complete view of their finances from the same digital platform.

Rather than competing primarily on fees and savings rates, Tangerine’s next phase will depend on how effectively it can turn its rebuilt technology foundation into products Canadians find meaningfully different from those offered by the country’s incumbent banks and growing collection of fintech challengers.
