Canada’s five largest financial institutions have cracked the 2026 edition of the the Evident AI Index for Banks.
Now in its fifth edition, the Evident AI Index acts as a global standard for measuring AI maturity across 50 of the world’s biggest banks through four weighted pillars: Innovation, Talent, Leadership, and Transparency.
This year, AI deployment across the sector moved nearly three times faster than in previous years, according to Evident, which launched the Index in 2023.
Leadership, however, remains “remarkably stable,” with the Royal Bank of Canada sitting on the podium for the fifth edition in a row—joining giants JPMorganChase and Capital One as “the undisputed top three.”

Behind the top leaders, through, the “race is tightening,” according to Evident, as “the bar for AI leadership” rises.
“Banking is one of the most advanced and competitive industries on the planet when it comes to developing and rolling out AI at scale,” Alexandra Mousavizadeh, a cofounder of Evident, remarked last year—with Canadian institutions being no exception to the rule.
CIBC, for example, won the Best Gen-AI Initiative award and the Best Digital Transformation Program award at the Global Transaction Banking Innovation Awards, where TD, RBC, and Scotiabank were also recognized.
The Royal Bank of Canada, which this year established its own in-house AI group, was also recently recognized by the 2026 IDC CIO Awards.
Beyond AI, RBC is also committed to advancing quantum computing technologies. The firm has been investing in quantum companies and rolling out a multi-year strategy with partners.
And all of the “big banks” are working jointly on a Canadian dollar based digital money solution.
